Great Taste 2017

Snowdonia’s Great Taste Gold Star journey

2017 has been a very successful year for some of our award winning food producers in Gwynedd, Great Taste Gold Awards achieved throughout the county – let’s take a road trip from North to South and sample some of these Gold Star Award winning culinary delights.

Cosyn Cymru in Bethesda produces a variety of ewe’s milk cheeses, yogurt and ice cream, with the creamy and buttery Brefu Bach (Little Bleat) a 2 star Gold Award winner – a cheese similar to Camembert but creamier with a hint of mushroom. This cheese, as well as Cosyn Cymru’s other products, are available at many independent outlets, and also locally at Blas Lôn Las Café and shop at Ffarm Moelyci, Tregarth.

Just up the road is Popty Bakery producing classic handmade Welsh Cakes and their award winning Traditional Bara Brith Fruit Cake – look out for them in some of the well-known supermarkets. At Penygroes south of Caernarfon, spice up the journey with a bottle of Roasted Chilli Sauce with Balsamic, a Great Taste Gold Star winner, one of many spicy products available at Maggies Exotic Foods.

Heading West to Morfa Nefyn, wholesale producer Daffodil Foods supplies major supermarkets and local independent shops throughout Wales with their yoghurts and cream products, their Welsh Sour Cream a 2017 Great Taste Award Winner. Long established South Caernarfon Creameries at Chwilog, near Pwllheli, produce the Welsh Slate Cavern Aged Cheddar , developed exclusively with major supermarket chain Sainsburys. This award winning cheese is matured for 14 months 500 feet below ground at the world famous Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog. An ideal accompaniment to this tangy, tasty cheddar cheese, would be a Spicy Tomato Chutney produced by consistent award winner Welsh Lady Preserves of Y Ffôr near Pwllheli.

If you’re feeling a bit thirsty after all this cheese, the Purple Moose brewery at Porthmadog has just the tipple, a couple of 2017 Great Taste Award Winning beers, the Antlered IPA and Chocolate Moose.

A short distance from Porthmadog is Nantmor, home of The Mushroom Garden , where mushroom expert Cynan Jones takes mushroom lovers on foraging trips through the old forests near Beddgelert, and also produces award winning HerbShroom Croutons and Umami Croutons. You don’t have to trudge through dense forest to find truffles, the chocolate variety are produced up the road at Ffestiniog at Cathryn Cariad Chocolates, their Dark Chocolate Sauce a 2017 award winner.
